Graduation Day

May 2010. After 7 years at Christa McAuliffe Elementary, it was time for Libby to leave the building. The school does a really good job of celebrating the work that the Sixth Graders have done, not only during Sixth Grade, but during their entire stay at Christa McAuliffe. The Sixth Graders kicked off the week by launching rockets that they constructed. (McAuliffe is named after the teacher who died in the Space Shuttle Challenger tragedy back in the 80's). The entire school came out to watch each 6th Grader launch their rocket. Libby's rocket is the white one with the black dots.

And here's the flight of Libby 1. The kids were supposed to run after their rocket and try and catch it before landing. Pretty tough with a big wind coming out of the south!

Here's Libby and Courtney after they both launched and retrieved their rockets.

Just Libby....

Wednesday night was the big night. Graduation Night. I was too busy watching everything to take too many pictures. But, I did get a shot of Libby getting her graduation certificate.

After the graduation ceremony, there was a party in the MPR. Lots of hugs, parents crying, and pictures being taken. For some reason, no one took the obvious photo in front of the building. Well, except for us. Elizabeth, Caleigh, Courtney, and Libby posed in front of the McAuliffe sign in front of the school.

Believe it or not, the Sixth Graders had to go to school the next day. They picked up their report cards and cleaned out their desks. They then walked through the school one last time, and out the door. Then it was off to the bowling alley and to Shawnee Mission Park for a picnic.

At the Park, the kids gathered around for one last class picture...

During the picnic, the girls in Libby's Girl Scout Troop surprised Lori (their fearless leader) with a scrap book filled with photos from the past several years of their troop's adventures. Lori was pretty surprised and touched by what the girls had put together.

So, the picnic ended, but our day wasn't. It was off to Indianapolis to see Aunt Karen and Uncle Steve and for me to go to the 500. The trip didn't turn out like we had expected...
